How to Calculate Practice Hours

Print this page

To receive an active-practising licence, you must indicate on your licence renewal application the amount of recent nursing practice hours or the date you have completed your nursing program. Depending on your work status or circumstance, you may require additional guidance to ensure you accurately complete this area of the application.

Use the following information below as a guide to completing this area of the application. Your practice hours should be calculated for the 2018 licensure year, which fall between November 1, 2017 and October 31, 2018.

If you are a nurse practitioner, please ensure you calculate the number of NP hours you have worked as well as in addition to any RN hours worked during the licensure year.

You can also learn more about this requirement by clicking here. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at registration@crnns.ca. We will respond within 5 business days.

Full-Time Work: Enter the name of your nursing employer and the 1725 hours worked within the 2018 licensure year.

Part-Time/Casual Work: Enter the name of your nursing employer and the number of hours worked in the 2018 licensure year. For example, if you are employed in a .5 position, claim 865 hours (1725 x .5) or if you are employed in a .7 position, claim 1,207 (1725 x .7) etc. You can also include an estimate of the hours you will work between the date that you submit your application and October 31. If your estimate is incorrect and you need to adjust your hours, you can do so by contacting us after November 1.

Non-Practising: if you did not work as a nurse during the last licensure year, enter “0” in the column Actual Number of RN Hours Practised and Actual Number of NP Hours practiced (if applicable) within the application.

Post-RN Baccalaureate/Masters/Doctorate Degree Program in Nursing: If you are enrolled in and attending one of these programs, enter the name of the university. Do not enter course hours. Post-RN certificate programs (e.g., perioperative nursing) cannot be used to meet the practice hour requirement.

Re-Entry Program: if you have completed a re-entry program within 5 licensure years prior to this licensing year, enter the name of the re-entry program next to the appropriate year in the Record of Nursing Employment section in the application. Do not enter program hours.

Competence Assessment and/or Bridging Education: if you have completed a competence assessment and/or bridging education within 5 licensure years prior to this licensing year, enter the name of the competence assessment or bridging education program next to the appropriate year in the Record of Nursing Employment section in the application. Do not enter program hours.
