Whether a member is registered for a day or a year, the cost of regulating that member is the same.  CRNNS is required to provide readily available services to the public and our members throughout the membership year.  Additionally, CRNNS collects and remits annual fees on behalf of members for the Canadian Nurse Protective Society (CNPS) and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA).  For these reasons, CRNNS is unable to offer pro-rated fees for a leave of absence.

The different types of leave are:

  • Family leave
  • Illness/injury leave
  • Education leave
  • Other leave of absence

If you plan on taking a leave of absence, please review the information below as the requirements and processes change over time.  It is recommended that you continue to check the website to determine
if there have been any changes to the application processes or timeframes.

The CRNNS licensure year runs from November 1 – October 31.

I am working as of November 1, 2017 and then taking leave during the licensure year

You must renew your licence during the annual renewal and pay the annual fee. Your licence and all accompanying benefits, including being able to call yourself a registered nurse, are valid for the entire licensure year. Even if you only work a few weeks or a few days into the new membership year, you need to pay the full year’s licensure fee.  Unfortunately, there is no short-term licence option.

I am returning to work between November 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018

To avoid the $46.00 reactivation fee charged after October 31, 2017, you can renew before November 1, 2017. This is the simplest way to renew. Your licence and all accompanying benefits, including being able to call yourself a registered nurse, are valid for the entire practice year. I am returning to work between July 1, 2018 and October 31, 2018

We recommend that you renew from July 1, 2018 onward as the fee is prorated for this time period. This is the simplest way to renew. Your licence and all accompanying benefits, including being able to call yourself a registered nurse, are valid from July 1, 2018 until October 31, 2018. If you will be returning to work on July 1, 2018 please contact CRNNS Registration Services at 902.491.9744 ext.221.

I am on leave and do not plan to work after October 31, 2017
