If you’re interested in re-entering the nursing profession in Nova Scotia or you do not have the nursing practice hours to qualify for licensure with the CRNNS, you have the option to complete either a re-entry program or a competence assessment and bridging education.

I’m not sure if I qualify to complete a re-entry program or a competence assessment.

You qualify to complete a re-entry program or a competence assessment and bridging education if you do not meet the following criteria:

  1. the hourly requirement of 1125 hours in the past five years or 450 hours in the year immediately preceding their application. The hourly requirements can only be met if the practice hours fall within the legislated definition of the practice of nursing. Volunteer hours cannot be used to meet the hourly requirement.
  2. have graduated from one of the following programs in the five years preceding their application:
    1. a Nova Scotia nursing education program
    2. an out-of-province Canadian nursing program
    3. a registered nurse re-entry/refresher program
    4. an international nursing program
  3. have completed a competence assessment and bridging education in the past five years
  4. are enrolled in and attending one of the following nursing programs while holding an active-practising licence:
    1. a post-RN baccalaureate degree program in nursing
    2. a masters/doctorate degree program in nursing

If you do not fall within one of the scenarios above, you must complete a re-entry program or competence assessment.

How do I apply for a re-entry program?

There are several steps required to apply for a re-entry program:

  1. Complete the Application for Permission to take RN-PDC re-entry and consent form
    1. If you’ve been previously registered in Nova Scotia: You must also complete the Assessment for Reactivation Licence form
    2. If you have never been registered in Nova Scotia: You must complete the Application for Initial Registration Assessment

We will copy you on the email sending your pertinent information to the Registered Nurses Professional Development Centre.

How do I apply for a competence assessment?

There are several steps required to apply for a competence assessment:

  1. Complete the Application to Complete a Competence Assessment and the Consent to Release Information
  2. Also complete and email us one of the following forms:
    1. If you’ve been previously registered in Nova Scotia: You must also complete the Assessment for Reactivation Licence form.
    2. If you have never been registered in Nova Scotia: You must complete the Application for Initial Registration Assessment.

We will copy you on the email sending your pertinent information to the Registered Nurses Professional Development Centre, the administrators of the competence assessment. You can then contact them to arrange your competence assessment.

It’s important to note that once your competence assessment is complete and the report is sent to you and the CRNNS, you may still be required to complete bridging education courses up to and including a full nursing re-entry program.
