New Law: Medical Assistance in Dying

Late on June 17, 2016, Bill C-14, which amends the criminal code to permit medical assistance in dying (MAiD), became law. This means that:

  • Nurse practitioners may provide a person with medical assistance in dying; and
  • RNs may aid physicians and nurse practitioners in providing a person with medical assistance in dying.

We are currently reviewing the new law and amending our current guidelines for distribution as soon as possible. We are also currently in the process of finalizing a guideline specifically for nurse practitioners, which we will be in a position to share shortly. Please stay tuned to our website for further developments. In the meantime, if you have any questions please contact one of our Practice Consultants for more detailed support by emailing practice@crnns.ca or calling 902-491-9744 (toll-free 800-565-9744).
